Greetings to all the parents, students, and the entire Ross River School Family!
Welcome Back to another year! Every one of us at Ross River School are excited to welcome students back for the 2023-2024 year, where we are excited about what lies ahead. My name is Pierce Butler and many of you may know me as your former teacher, and/or vice principal over the past five years. As the new principal of Ross River School, I am excited to be back and to share my stories, make new and deeper connections with each and every one of you, after taking the past year off to travel. I feel privileged to have grown into this role under the guidance of our former principal Fran Etzel for some five years as well as from our own Paul McFayden as the vice principal when I first arrived in Ross River.
It is my desire to honour both of these amazing administrators by continuing to build Ross River school into a place where students, parents and community members look forward to spending time, sharing ideas and being in an environment where culture and learning can be celebrated. As someone who sees the importance of language as it relates to culture and its survival, along with a love for learning new languages and immersing oneself in the culture in which they are, our focus will be the furthered adoption of Kaska and the Dena Kaska culture within the school.
With the formation First Nation School Board made up of an Executive Director, Melissa Flynn, and school board trustees, the possibilities for enriching the experiences for our learners both culturally and academically is exciting. I feel optimistic that as a school comprised of bright young minds, enthusiastic educators, involved parents and a supportive community with strong leadership, positive change is on the horizon as we head into another school year.
